TLucy Knisley and I had an interview aired on KBOO’s Words and Pictures radio show!
Johanna Draper Carlson wrote the great article Confessions of an Immature Pervert: Erika Moen Overcomes Puritanism for Publisher’s Weekly about DAR! and the troubles I had getting my oeuvre of filth printed.
Just to say: Hearing aids are quite cool. Especially, if one starts wearing them early.
I tell this as a deaf 26 year old who wears his since 8 years.
One can get hearing aids in all kinds of colors (mine are orange), and you can actually participate in conservation.
On the one hand, I love reading your comics. On the other hand, occaisionally it’s scary because it’s like reading a comic about myself.
I have the hairs/gas/deafness/tea obsession issue too.
We aren’t old people!! Yet!
I love Staples. . . Have since I was a kid. I blame my parents. My bf just doesn’t get it!
Maybe when you’ve gotten to the point where an Englishman finds your tea drinking excessive and degenerate you’re drinking too much fucking tea.
I was born hard of hearing, it’s fun. :D I can get out of doing some chores if I’m too tired by pretending I didn’t hear what I was being told to do.
i get hurt doing simple things to
Wait’ll the granny hair becomes plural and includes a couple at the corners of your mouth. D: I remember watching my mother pluck chin hairs when I was wee and thinking that I would never be so gross… joke’s on me.
…Erica, you’re adorable. Seriously.
If it helps, I’m 18 and I fit the credentials too. And I’ve walked into trees before when I’m sleepy.
Man, I hear you on all of that…except of course for the chin hair, since I’ve got a beard and all. The gray mustache hairs are a bit disconcerting though. :[
I read this while on my 4th cuppa of the day. It made me laugh quite a bit. Add in “love of documenaries” and “knits constantly” and it’s me all over. Old people rule! (Hey, we should start telling kids to get off our lawns.)
Haha this is especially appropriate for me since it’s my birthday and I’ve been feeling rather ollld. In comparison with my brothers, anyway.
And my husband plucks my chin hair every week or two. :(
Happy Birthday Kayla! =)
I’m with Phillip – Hearing aids are totally awesome now. They’re trying to stop calling them hearing aids and switch to “Personal Communication Devices” (PCDs) and if you get the higher end ones, they actually are bluetooth compatible and can stream music from your mp3 player. AND THE COLORS!!! Pretty blue, but its not like you can see mine anyways…
We all have to get old sooner or later, but it looks like we picked a good time to do it.
Why can I relate so much to your life? *rubs sore neck, looks down at hearing aid and resists scratching the lawn of chin-hair she just shaved off yesterday*
Just wait until you get the long curly eyebrow hairs. That’s when you’ll really feel old. ^_^
Well Thank God I’m not old yet. At 51, I’ve barely reached “mature”, lol. But I could definitely do without the chin hairs (and yeah, that’s been happening for about 30 years).
Erma Bombeck said “they aren’t chin hairs, they’re stray eyebrows”. I stick with that.
i one time looked closely at my great grandmothers face for some odd reason and noticed she had a mustache. it still scares me.
Twenty one years old. Sometimes throw my back out. Walk slowly. With a cane. Hate the younger generation. You know what? I am old people too.
That’s one thing that sucks about being a tranny, the facial hair either makes people think I’m a boy or aged. The latter has only happened once since I started transition. Goddess, I cannot wait until I finish up with my electrolysis.
Phew…Just finished reading up to this point.
I like how your comic feels genuine, and doesn’t feel forced, or contrived. To me, the combination of life introspective and parody was both comforting and entertaining.
I am definitely hooked for the foreseeable future. ;)
Erika, I am so with you on the being “yold people” (young old people). I can predict the weather with my knee…and I forget stuff all the time…and I get weird chin hairs…and I don’t like for stuff to change!
Wait until you find your first grey pube, lady.
I like ripping out a good forceful fart, i don’t see the point of holding them in (unless there is the threat of a possible follow-through).
My hearing isn’t exactly bad, i just don’t really pay attention to what people are saying, then my mind fills in what it thinks they said, the other day when my mate said he couldn’t find his Zippo fluid i heard it as “I can’t find my nipple fluid”.
I’m with Philipp–hearing aids are awesome little pieces of technology. I’m profoundly deaf in one ear and hearing impaired in the other, and have been wearing a hearing aid since I was about fourteen months old. :D
I possess at least four of the old people traits listed (and the tenacity of my granny hair probably ought to count as at least three more), and I’m not even twenty yet.
I second the motion, embly
Oh god, the granny hair! It’s such a pain. And I think a new one just showed up last week to join the original. Very unamused.
According to your list, I became an old person at the ripe age of 19.
as a fellow brit …. just HOW MUCH tea are you getting through that you’re exceeding our limits? I think I could easily get through three pints in a day without difficulty. though my job demands i’m perked up more with coffee…
then again if I remember rightly yours tends to be the type taken without milk, so it’s apt to coat your teeth and throat with an irritating film if poorly made / brewed with water from a nasty supplier / done to excess!
ps, old people are awesome. you’ve already hit the point where you do and say whatever the hell you like and don’t give a shit about the consequences, right?
Wow, this seems like me. A lot.
I really do have an obsession with tea, I will literally cradle a kettle like my it is my child. Oh, and the obsessions with office supplies too, I get carried away with paperclips. You can get ones that look like candy canes! :3
I have that SAME HAIR!
you almost killed me with your re-ocurring granny hair…
OH MY GOD the granny hair. I have that same little bitch too.
